Getting around geo blocked content with Tor browser.

I use the Tor browser for web surfing which I do not want tracked. I do not use it much because proxying your web traffic through several Onion routers can kind of slow things down a bit. Another side effect of proxying traffic through several Onion routers is it often makes your web traffic look like it is originating from another country.

This morning a friend of mine sent a link to a YouTube video which was geo blocked outside of Canada. Grr.

Wouldn't it be great Tor could exit the Onion router network in a specific country?

Well, it can.

Just edit the torrc file (located in Tor Browser\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Tor) with Notepad and add the following line:

ExitNodes {ca}

Note: Upper case "CA" did not work. Lower case code, "ca", did.

Here is a list of country codes which I think will work:

Internet country domains list / Country Internet codes / TLDs - World Standards
This is a full list of all country TLDs (top-level domains). The official list of top-level domains is maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). IANA is responsible for the global coordination of the DNS Root, IP addressing, and other Internet protocol resources.
