Ventoy: My new favorite utility

As an IT consultant and system administrator it is sometimes necesssary to boot a system off of a USB flash drive.

Historically, I would grab a USB drive and overwrite whatever was on it. I have half a dozen drives in my office and it was always too much effort to keep track of which drive had which OS or utility installed. Also, since ISO images are updated all the time this insured I was getting the latest version of whatever OS or utility.

Multiboot USB solutions have been around for a while and they never quite worked for me...until Ventoy.

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files.

  • Open source means it is FREE.
  • All the other goobledy gook means that it works with a lot of different disk images.

It is super easy to use. Download Ventoy from their website. Flash your USB drive. Then just copy over any disk images you might need. Ventoy automatically presents a menu of available disk images for you to use.

Super handy.

Whenever I need to rebuild a system or a boot drive I used to grab one of the drives and flash a new ISO over it, since it was too difficult to keep track of what ISO was installed on which drive. Also, ISO images get updated all the time so reflashing the drive with the latest ISO meant that I would be install or using the latest version of whatever operating system or utility.
